Chex Mix

This blog started as a way for me to keep track of recipes I used and liked and didn't want to have to scrounge around for when I wanted to use them again.

I scrounged yesterday.

This fall I am working part time, and in the part of my time that I am not working I am ORGANIZING!! It is glorious. It is necessary and it is fun. Yesterday I was cleaning out a ridiculously deep cabinet in my kitchen and found that there were 9 little individual breakfast packets of Chex. My kids seemed to be ignoring them as a source of breakfast cereal so I decided to make Chex Mix with them. Easy. (it really is if you have the recipe handy) I KNEW I had it somewhere. Grandmother makes a continuous stream of it at Christmas. I could not find it. So I did what I should have done in the first place, I went to the internet. Easy.

So here it is. Chex Mix. The way to redeem an overlooked breakfast cereal into a disappearing snack.

Ingredient List
  • 3 cups Corn Chex™ cereal
  • 3 cups Rice Chex™ cereal
  • 3 cups Wheat Chex™ cereal
  • 1 cup mixed nuts
  • 1 cup bite-size pretzels
  • 1 cup garlic-flavor bite-size bagel chips or regular-size bagel chips, broken into 1-inch pieces
  • 6 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Preparation
  1. In large microwavable bowl, mix cereals, nuts, pretzels and bagel chips; set aside. In small microwavable bowl, microwave butter uncovered on High about 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in seasonings. Pour over cereal mixture; stir until evenly coated.
  2. Microwave uncovered on High 5 to 6 minutes, thoroughly stirring every 2 minutes. Spread on paper towels to cool. Store in airtight container.
Tips
  • Substitution: The original recipe includes Corn Chex™, Rice Chex™ and Wheat Chex™. You can mix and match to suit your taste—just use a total of 9 cups of cereal. I also like pretzels or Cheez-its. Try it with whatever your family likes.
